Many
of the spirituals composed by the black slaves who worked on plantations
before and during the American Civil War are well know and influential
in America's pop music. When the Saints Go Marchin' In has its roots in
the traditions of the spiritual : but in the 20th century it has been
taken up by all sorts of ensembles - from Dixieland jazz groups and orchestras
of the big-band days, to rock bands. |
