Remembrance

« Perhaps the living and the dead inhabit two different dimensions of the same world. Sometimes, especially in the mists between ‘asleep’ and ‘awake’ you can sense the presence of a departed loved-one so keenly it is almost as if you could reach out and touch them. As a musical expression of this idea, Remembrance operates simultaneously in two time signatures, 4/4 and 9/8. They coincide only fleetingly.

Remembrance was composed in memory of my life partner, John Endemann. It is dedicated to and was premiered by Yves Segers and the Royal Symphonic Band
of the Belgian Guides in September 2024.

Performance Notes

In this piece I use dynamics that indicate solely the prominence of certain musical ideas and motifs, without taking into consideration the relative power of different calibrated by the player and the conductor. When the tenuto mark (–) is used it denotes a moderate accent without any durational aspect. »
