This programmatic work paints a musical picture of the three virtues of mankind. The first movement, “Courage” opens with rhythmic ostinati in winds accompanied by staccato brass leading to a tutti statement of this motif. The main theme is performed by solo flute then passed over to the horn section. This captures the strength of human beings navigating the struggles of existence. After a brief development of this robust theme, the work returns to a variation of the opening ostinato. The composition culminates in a grand statement of the main theme with tutti ensemble, bringing this movement to a rhythmic, riveting conclusion. Movement two, “Compassion” explores the empathetic side of humans. The main theme is stated by solo Oboe surrounded by a delicate, harmonic tapestry in clarinets and saxophones. As the theme develops, the work becomes more rich and full, utilizing all instruments. This portrays the growing compassion we have for those who are experience emotional conflict. The piece ends quietly with solo Flute and Oboe. Movement three, “Perseverance” begins with chromatic woodwinds lines accompanied by brass staccati. These swirling winds emulate the drive and adrenaline that humans possess to achieve their goals. After this introduction, the main thematic material is presented by the Trumpet section. As the piece develops, a secondary theme is stated in upper winds and then traded off to brasses. Lighter in character but still conveys strength. The composition climaxes in a grande reprise of the main theme and ends with intense, chromatic swirling wind lines, bringing, “The Virtues of Mankind” to an epic conclusion.
